Meeting: Denise Milan and Carl Fillion

A conversation about the creative process for the play “The Adventures of Agrégora”

Wednesday June, 07 2017 | 19H

On Wednesday June 7th, Denise Milan and the Canadian set designer Carl Fillion will give a talk at the Lume Gallery about “The Adventures of Agrégora”, the artist’s latest work, which reveals her vision of the metaphor of the stone targeted to children’s theater.

Agrégora, the protagonist of “Opera of the Stones” from 2010, appears now alongside other characters in their challenges in the underground world. From magma to quartz, the story recounts the drama of crystal in continuous transformation. The crystal, an element that expresses perfection in nature, serves as a mirror and reflects the aspirations of the human being, allowing for the expansion of his consciousness.

Invited by Denise to direct and create the set design of the piece, Carl Fillon comes to Brazil to research and study the artist’s processes of creation. With extensive experience in set design, having worked with Cirque de Soleil and acclaimed director Robert Lepage, Carl’s vision is fundamentally based on the use of set design as one of the tools to present a story to the audience, creating a poetic and magical artistic environment.

Launch of the book “Dialogue of Civilizations”

It was in 2013 and I had been invited to speak at the Dialogue of Civilizations event in Beirut, Lebanon. But while I was preparing to go, the war in Syria broke out. My philosopher friends who were organizing the event thought about cancelling. Without fully considering the size of the effort, I decided that the dialogue had to continue. And so, along with Olgária Matos, we hosted the international event in São Paulo, this multicultural and multilingual city (as Haroldo de Campos said in the book Cadumbra!).

Since then, this summit of cultures has borne fruit. The book Dialogue of Civilizations, published by UNIFESP, will be launched on May 25 at the Mario de Andrade Library. Organized by Olgária Matos, Javier Amadeo and I, the book contains the essential reflections of great thinkers such as Edward J. Alam, Gilles Lapouge and Lawrence Sullivan, among many others who are equally poignant and inspiring. It received the support of chancellors from USP and UNIFESP, Maria Arminda and Soraya Smaili and the Municipal Secretary of Culture of São Paulo.

You can join us, it will be at 6:30 pm, at the Mario de Andrade Library, Rua Consolação, 94, Consolação, São Paulo

May the Star of the East shine in the West. Happy to be together on the great journey, that inspires us and can inspire many others.

Brasilis Island at the MAC

Since 2012, the photographic installation Brasilis Island has been exhibited in the United States, in the context of the exhibition Mist of the Earth. It has journeyed through several institutions, such as the Chicago Cultural Center, Wilson Center and Georgetown University.
And so, now, Brasilis Island will go to MAC SP – Museum of Contemporary Art of São Paulo, where will be part of a show that gathers the works of 120 national and international artists. It will remain at MAC for 5 years!
I am very proud to participate!
Would you like to go see it?

At Georgetown

Earth, 2012 by Denise Milan

I am in the United States, in Georgetown. On May 25, the sculpture “Earth” will be launched at Georgetown University and in this month of April Professor Naomi Moniz begins to teach the course on the Language of Stones at the same University, a work that I have been developing for eight years. Isn’t this something to be proud of?

This is what I believe in:

The blue stone egg — a prophet of unity within diversity

evoking our common origins
to envision a reunion of man and nature
providing a common language
where diversity translates to richness treasured and protected
freeing us to see Earth — one big blue stone!

SP-Arte 2017

I will be at SP-Art 2017 from April 6-9 at booth B3 in the Lume Gallery. The fair is more vibrant each year, more cool galleries, more movement, more of that cultural buzz that makes São Paulo such an exciting city to live in! Don’t miss coming and discover or (re) discover. It will be held at Ibirapuera Park, check it out here:
